i don't think 18 months is enough
for this sub-human. you KNOW somethin' ain't right here. if those kids are allowed to see their father WITHOUT some type of supervisor being present something is very wrong indeed (with 'the system'). i'd #1, give him more time and #2, NOT ALLOW HIM TO SEE HIS CHILDREN UNTIL THEY WERE 18 (and at that time ONLY if THEY wanted to see him)

a story with a happy ending (for a change)
i do have to say every pit i personally have ever met, has been nice to people. i've seen several who have cats as house mates too. they all get along just fine.
i know if one trains a dog to fight or kill, it will do so, or if it cannot, it will usually be killed by those doing the training. these are NOT human beings to me. they're scum.
this is unprecedented. i know for a fact when fighting pits are 'rescued' 9 out of 10 times they are euthanized because they are deemed to dangerous to rehabilitate. well NOT in this case and it appears to have worked. heck one of these dogs wears a clown collar and is a therapy dog in a cancer ward!
man, i LOVE dogs and i sure am glad most of these dogs got a second chance. we all know other dogs won't.
oh and a shout out to U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson. he didn't have to do what he did. but he did it and saved a LOT of dogs.

Some animal rights groups called for the "ticking time bombs" to be euthanized as soon as Vick's case was closed and they were no longer valuable as evidence. That's what typically happens after a dogfighting bust. nstead, the court gave Vick's dogs a second chance. U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson ordered each dog to be evaluated individually, not judged by the stereotype of the breed. And he ordered Vick to pony up close to $1 million to pay for the lifelong care of those that could be saved.........

i'm not going to watch the video
which you can find if you click the link below. i don't have to. normally i'm not up on my soapbox about being a non-carnivore. i AM always on my soapbox when i see animals mistreated. (i can't tell you how many times i've called the police when i see a dog locked in a HOT car. oh i try to find the owner first but i don't waste too much time on that). i don't yell at people in fur coats (although i would LOVE to). i have 'accidently' driven by veal calves tied up to their little dog houses with a friend who perhaps ordered veal the last time we went out to eat. when they ask what it is they're looking at (you know a LOT of people don't know how or what veal is) i very innocently tell them.
if one is a half way decent human being, i cannot understand why one wouldn't INSIST upon humane treatment of animals. for food, for work, for companionship, for whatever.

"We found downed cows in a state of ill health, with no relief provided to the animals," said Wayne Pacelle, the organization's president and chief executive.

a shout out to del tom hucker
and the state of maryland. a while back we discovered some of the coats we were buying that were labled 'faux fur' were REAL fur (mostly from racoon dogs. a dog native to china). well maryland wants to do something about it!

once again i'm NOT preaching
i read these articles (and actually have seen some HORRIFIC things) and i think to myself, how can we consider ourselves human? do most people know how their steak actually gets into the supermarket? do most people who bring their kids to the circus know the elephants are jabbed with big hooks (and of course all of the other animals are mistreated too). there is a woman at work who wears the pelts of dead bunnies. i CRINGE every time i see her in that horrid bloody jacket. i wonder to myself if she knows how those bunnies died.
i know not everyone agrees with me here, but if one mistreats animals, it's a very small (tiny, miniscule) step to mistreating one another. it is ugly business. our consumption of animals. first this article i found in the wapo today and second an article forwarded to me from justin goodman was in sunday's ny times. the second article is NOT about abuse. it's about our consumption of dead animal flesh (and organs)

The two commodities share a great deal: Like oil, meat is subsidized by the federal government. Like oil, meat is subject to accelerating demand as nations become wealthier, and this, in turn, sends prices higher. Finally — like oil — meat is something people are encouraged to consume less of, as the toll exacted by industrial production increases, and becomes increasingly visible.
Global demand for meat has multiplied in recent years, encouraged by growing affluence and nourished by the proliferation of huge, confined animal feeding operations. These assembly-line meat factories consume enormous amounts of energy, pollute water supplies, generate significant greenhouse gases and require ever-increasing amounts of corn, soy and other grains, a dependency that has led to the destruction of vast swaths of the world’s tropical rain forests.......

i don't usually preach about this sort of thing
what i eat and what you eat is our own bid-nez. EXCEPT when shite like this happens. i really DO think people MUST be informed about how animals are treated. i'm not asking anyone to stop eating meat (although i would love that to happen). i want people who treat animals like this to be brought to justice. it's NOT right. it's not even IF that animal is going to end up on your dinner table
Extreme Torture of Animals–and Humans: A Thanksgiving Prayer for Mercy

I have seen it all before but it still shocks me. The Humane Farming Association recently shot undercover video at an Ohio pig farm which shows animals living and dying in conditions far more horrifying than one finds in any torture camp. And what I am about to describe in this article is typical of the lives of the 10 billion ‘food’ animals raised for slaughter in America each year.
Pigs with broken legs and broken backs; pigs with prolapsed vaginas and abscessed tumors; pigs crowded so closely together they cannot move or turn around, living in their own excrement; pigs bashed with hammers and shocked with electric prods.
At this Ohio farm, the pigs are killed through strangulation. We see a worker kicking and then beating a pig with a metal bar. The pig cannot walk either due to broken legs or partial paralysis, and so the man relentlessly bashes and bashes and bashes her to make her crawl down a corridor until he kicks her off a four-foot ledge onto a muddy yard. She is then chained around the neck and hoisted by a fork-lift. It takes her about five minutes to die as she struggles desperately. During her last few seconds of life, you see one of her feet waving feebly in the air. While this is happening, the men are joking around, as if it is all good fun.
A few feet away, a group of pigs are huddled together, waiting their turn. Some are lying on top of others, forming a pile of animals too weak to move. They are covered with excrement; one has a broken leg sticking out at an odd angle; they look near death already, from the conditions of torture they were raised in............

yesterday i read YET ANOTHER article (i can't find the link or i would have linked to it) about vick being railroaded. it said there were other football players out there who beat their wives and no one gives a shite.
WELL THAT'S NOT TRUE. i have no idea who beats their wives and who doesn't. i care about that, but i sure don't care about football. it has NOTHING to do with this story. i don't care if vick is allowed to play again or not. THAT IS NOT THE POINT. the color of his skin is NOT the point, the amount of money he has or doesn't have is NOT the point, who he hangs out with is NOT the point. and this dude, cortland milloy certainly is missing the point. he is saying if you sit down and eat a steak dinner (which i do NOT by the way but that is neither here nor there) you are JUST as guilty as michael vick. he is also bringing guns into the story???????????? i say let's just change vick's name to oj and get it over with. declare him innocent
Animal Cruelty Isn't Judged on a Level Playing Field

While eating a porterhouse the other night, I began to see the steak for what it was: a hunk of meat, blood and bone. I managed to disgust myself even more by imagining that a charbroiled piece of pit bull would not have looked much different from the gristle of beef on my fork.
Then I came back to my senses and continued to enjoy my meal.
Too bad for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick that people like me love dogs more than cows. Or, to put it another way, I prefer the taste of Angus and Hereford to Rottweiler and pit bull. Otherwise, the federal agents who recently charged Vick with dogfighting would have to arrest nearly all of us for participating in far worse acts of animal cruelty........
............Vick's case ought to be handled by a state's attorney, but it isn't. He is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia. You'd think the guy had been caught smuggling a ton of heroin in the carcasses of dead poodles...........

i'm SICK of it
STOP IT. stop defending michael vick. he's agreed to plead guilty. as far as i am concerned he IS guilty. STOP blaming his friends, the crowd he hangs with. STOP telling me what a good guy he is. (i can't find it now, but i read an article earlier where a teammate or friend said what a wonderful guy vick was because he tossed a ball around with the friend's son). a GOOD GUY DOES NOT buy dogs, fight dogs, TORTURE dogs and KILL DOGS. they don't. period. end of it.

i've written about vick twice (once earlier today). i've written about animal abusers WAY more than twice. MOST of whom had skin the color of new fallen snow (well you get my drift so to speak). the pig and dog fights i wrote about yesterday (the video was rife with WHITE faces, nary a person of color in sight) had no color attached to them.
want to bring color into this? WELL I EFFING DON'T. ANYONE that tortures animals is beyond redemption and the scum of the earth.

West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd trembled with rage on the Senate floor as he lashed out at the barbarity of dog fighting. Byrd, a well-known inveterate animal lover, didn’t mention star Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick by name in his animal defending tirade. Vick has been indicted on federal charges linked to gambling and dog fighting. But Massachusetts Senator John Kerry did mention Vick. He demanded that the NFL suspend Vick. There was no hint that they singled out Vick for attack for any reason other than that they were enraged that a high profile athlete had abused animals and thereby sullied sport.
But the Humane Society of America, the legion of animal rights groups, and a handful of sports commentators that want Vick’s head skipped the racial subtleties and virtually declared that dog fighting is the “sport” of the ghetto, glorified by rappers, indulged in with bloody relish by gang members, and now by black athletes like Vick.......

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was indicted by a federal grand jury in connection with the dog fighting probe of his property in Virginia, ESPN television reported on Tuesday.
Vick was indicted for conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities, as well as to sponsor a dog in animal fighting venture, ESPN said.
The indictment reportedly came in US District Court for the Eastern District in Richmond, Virginia, according to the web site.
The report also stated that three others - Purnell Peace, Quanis Phillips and Tony Taylor - also were indicted by the grand jury on the same charges.
Dog fighting is illegal in Virginia and a felony in 48 of America's 50 states, including Virginia..............
Vick faces different kind of pressure now
.............A person who spoke with Vick at length after the indictments were announced said that the quarterback was "devastated" by the news. Whether those feelings were feigned or not, we can't say, because we weren't party to the conversation. But in reading the indictments, it isn't as if Vick's name is simply sprinkled into the federal documents. The pages are actually rife with references to the Atlanta star.
In late May, two federal law enforcement officials told ESPN.com they felt there was sufficient evidence to eventually indict Vick, but were less certain of mounting successful prosecution. There is a reason, however, that the Feds own a conviction rate of better than 95 percent. The government typically doesn't indict unless it knows it can probably convict, and that should be unsettling news for the Falcons and their quarterback.
On July 7, a day after the latest raid on Vick's property, one of those same federal sources told ESPN.com for a column that the quarterback was still part of the investigation. "Just because you've got a lot of links [lying] around doesn't mean you can call in a chain," the source said. "But it also doesn't mean you abandon the notion of seeing if those links might someday become a chain." .............

i happened to see this on nightline the other night
and it was NOT pretty. lots of pet owners were (literally) forced to abandon their animals. there were even pet rescue workers from other states that were PREVENTED from helping. as if effing up helping the people of the gulf coast wasn't enough...

Residents of St. Bernard Parish have since claimed they were forced to leave behind their dogs, which were then wantonly killed by sheriff's deputies. The dog owners have filed a class action lawsuit, asserting their pets were executed in three schools that were supposed to serve as shelters.........
