9 Conservative Myths About Right-Wing Domestic Terrorism

It's been a wild couple of weeks for those of us in the wingnutology business. Our services have been in tremendous demand as the mainstream media try to sort out the meaning of what Scott Roeder and James von Brunn did.

I've done an average of one radio show every day for the past two weeks trying to help various lefty talkers around the country make some sense of it all; and I'm generally gratified at how seriously people are starting to take this.

At the same time, I'm also appalled (though, sadly, hardly surprised) by the conservative mythmaking that's going on around the very serious issue of right-wing domestic terrorism. So it's obviously time to pull together another "Firing Back" piece to give progressives what they need to separate fact from fiction when these talking points start flying.

I've actually had every one of the following myths pitched to me by on-air interviewers, phone-in callers and/or online commenters over the last two weeks. Most of them have come up over and over, which suggests to me that you're likely to encounter them, too. So let's walk 'em through:.............

oh and does it surprise you the 'alleged' murderer was a member of a white supremacist organization? doesn't surprise me in the least

A Brief History of the Radical Right

Explaining Scott Roeder’s journey from anti-government extremist to anti-abortion fanatic.

The revelation that Scott Roeder, the alleged murderer of Dr. George Tiller, belonged to an anti-government, white separatist group called the Montana Freemen might seem like an unlikely twist. After all, such groups are generally thought of as either indifferent to the issue of abortion or actively enthusiastic about its potential for reducing the nonwhite population. As it turns out, however, the journey from radical racialist to anti-abortionist isn't as unusual as you might think.

Roeder's connections to the right-wing fringe began well over a decade ago, according to the Kansas City Star. His ex-wife, Lindsey, said that after a few years of marriage, Roeder became increasingly involved with the Freemen and its anti-government ideology. "The anti-tax stuff came first, and then it grew and grew. He became very anti-abortion…That's all he cared about is anti-abortion. 'The church is this. God is this.' Yadda yadda." Noting that she vehemently disagreed with her ex-husband's views, Lindsey Roeder told the Star that he moved out in 1994. "I thought he was over the edge with that stuff," she said. "He started falling apart. I had to protect myself and my son."...............

Suspect in Doctor’s Killing Tied to Vandalism Case

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Law enforcement officials said on Tuesday that they received a report of vandalism from an abortion clinic here on Saturday involving a man resembling Scott Roeder, the man charged in the shooting death on Sunday in Wichita of a doctor who provided late-term abortions at another clinic.

Arriving for an early shift around sunrise, a nurse at the Kansas City clinic, Aid for Women, noticed the man trying to pour super glue into a lock on the back door, another clinic worker said. Spooked, the man fled, but not before the nurse noted his license plate number, which the authorities later linked to Mr. Roeder.

The man seemed strident, the clinic worker said, and repeated phrases like “baby killer.” ............
