Boy, 14, Seized in Plot to Open Fire at School
By JON HURDLE and IAN URBINA
PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa., Oct. 11 — A 14-year-old boy was arrested Wednesday night after the police received a tip that he was plotting a shooting spree at a high school in this northern suburb of Philadelphia, the authorities said.
The police said that the boy had been planning a “Columbine style” attack on students at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School and that in searching his home, they had found a 9-millimeter assault rifle, dozens of authentic-looking BB and air guns, and seven hand grenades he was making, four of which were operational.
At a news conference Thursday, the Montgomery County district attorney, Bruce L. Castor Jr., stood before a table that held the seized weaponry, which looked daunting even though most of it was air-powered imitations.
The genuine assault rifle, for which no ammunition was found in the home, was bought legally at a gun show by the boy’s mother, the police said. But she bought it for her son, Mr. Castor said, adding that as a result his office was still deciding what charges to file against her, if any........

It's NOT an assault rifle despite the DA's ignorant declaration as such.

It is a semiautomatic SMG. It shoots handgun bullets. "Assault Rifles"(as if a midsize rifle cartridge chambered rifle is destined for "Assaulting") shoot small rifle bullets.

A big, clumsy handgun with a long barrel, a magazine forward of the grip, that's design has higher potential for bullet velocity: is STILL a big clumsy handgun,(oversized machine pistol) and definately NOT an assault rifle.

The gun the cop used to shoot 6 people on the other hand was not a "police style rifle" it was an "assault rifle" or AR-15 in grown up words.

Considering everything a 14 year old owns is their parents property, unless they found it in the kids hands, the worst case scenerio is a bunch of cops confinscated a very nice gun collection from two adults with poor judgement in firearm storage, and a child with racist ignorance leanings, and no sense of what NOT to say.

And some oversized and likely harmless firecracke... I mean...: "grenades"

Sounds like a police department is fishing for federal funding to me.

While your attention to detail is commendable. I really doubt the distinction would matter a whole lot if he had taken it to school and started using it on unarmed students and faculty.

What can we do about this sort of thing - this kind of stuff HAS to stop - it made me sick to read that a mother would voluntarily purchase and let her son 'play' with weapons. It is sick and disgusting. Who cares if the police department is 'fishing for funding' -- its NEEDED obviously

Proof that gun control is not the problem, PEOPLE are. There will always be profiteers, plotters against liberty, thugs, over doting parents and a whole array of otherwise legally entitled weapon owners who simply pose a threat that can only be countered by self defense. If you live where its cold you dress for warmth, if you have to walk in the dark you wear reflective clothing, when you fear for your life you carry a gun. Pure and simple it is a RIGHT to protect ones self, not to have to dial 911 while you are bleeding out or hiding in your closet.

The only three of those so-called "weapons" could be considered weapons at all. The rest of the lot were plastic pellet shooting bb guns that couldn't have hurt anyone if they were fired. The DA was being incredibly deceptive in parading them out like that claiming it to be an "arsenal". So is the media. I have been shooting firearms since I was seven years old. I got my first at age 12. I'm currently in police training. I done my best to live a good life. My grandfather taught me the responsibilities of owning a firearm. It should not be taken lightly. This boy was obviously not taught this. It is not the firearm, but the character of the individual who wields it.

morgan, thanks for the info. you sound well versed (in firearms). it also sounds like you are not disturbed by this family. a 14 year old with over 30 guns (yes, they were air and or bb but 30 c'mon now) AND a 'REAL' semi-automatic (not assault. i have NO idea what the difference is but neither of them sounds like they belong in the hands of 99.9% of the population). a 14 year old who was building grenades (firecrackers to you). while you think the parents showed POOR JUDGEMENT, i think they went far beyond that. it's all well and good you think the police department just wants money. i think they actually SAVED LIVES. it appears you and i are on opposite sides of this issue. that makes me afraid. your belief this was no big deal. IT IS a big deal. (as was the murders committed by that young cop).

anonymous 1, i cannot agree with you more

tara, i cannot agree with YOU more either

anonymous #2, with very few exceptions, i do not believe anyone but cops and military should have guns.

i do sincerely thank you all for your comments, even if i don't agree with some of them.

anonymous #3, i admire you for being in police training. i think cops, firefighters and teachers are the absolute heroes of our society.

that said, i just cannot see putting a firearm in the hands of a child. i respectfully disagree with your view of this story. i don't care if all of the guns were air rifles or bb guns. that kid COULD HAVE wreaked terror.

thank you for your comments

Oh my goodness, Rose attracts attention from the give 'em all guns and let 'em shoot it out crowd.

I think I'm going to build a mortar launcher here in the back yard. I think I'll load the mortars with chlorine gas. After all, that's just an arm and I have the right to bear arms.

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

I too have a gun collection. All of my firearms are locked away, and each one of them has a separate trigger lock. Responsible parents don't let their children have access to functional firearms. Responsible parents also don't let their children shoot or use any weapon unsupervised.

i know you have three children in your family. i also know you have guns. there was NEVER a doubt in my mind you'd allow any one of them to have 30 guns (even if they were bb or air) laying around their room, or grenade making supplies laying about or hand painted nazi flags

Because, I'm NOT CRAZY, rose. Sometimes I make poor choices, but rarely do those choices hurt anyone other than me.

Like the canoing incident, and other adventures.
