this made me nauseated

and i'm sitting here crying like a baby. (really)

i'm not black. can't pretend to FULLY know what it's like to 'shop while black'. i know what it's like to shop while being a rose is a rose. i'm a bit on the unusual side. i'm not your grrrl next door. when i go into a store i'm followed. almost always. have i even stolen from a store? no. do i think about stealing? no.

i have seen the results of both driving while black and shopping while black. i get away easily being white. they usually give up on me after a couple of minutes - seeing i'm NOT a threat to steal. people of color do not. to the woman in the red dress (the first one they show sticking up for the 'shopper' and the bunch of people at the end who walked out with the 'shopper', YOU'RE MY KIND O' PEEPS. a big fat shout out to you

Post-racial America: shopping while black

by: Pam Spaulding

I get sick watching this, hearing the excuses for the discrimination. And I've had this happen to me more than once (only in NYC, mind you, not here in NC), and hailing a cab while black (again, in NYC). If you had a front row seat to this kind of racism, would you take action? Nothing -- that's what one patron does. It's not her problem, and she probably sides with the salesperson anyway, looking at the expression on her face.........

Is This 12-Year-Old the Next Michael Pollan?
Posted by Tara Lohan
It was extraordinarily refreshing to read a recent guest post (What the Heck is ProFood Anyway?) on one of the great food blogs, Every Kitchen Table. The author explains exactly what this new word, ProFood, is all about and why it's important we care. And better yet, this author, Orren Fox, is only 12 years old.,,,,,,

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

How can we make America or even just your own home or school ProFood?

* Choose pesticide free, hormone free, and artificial color free foods
* Drink water instead of high fructose corn syrup sweetened drinks
* Eat fresh foods like an apple or sliced red pepper rather than foods that never rot
* Ask where your food comes from and how it was raised
* Plant some seeds in the spring in a little pot and if you grow too much share it with a neighbor
* Respect the farmer, rancher, farm workers, animals (they are farm workers too) and the planet. (Some of these ideas come from Food, Inc..............

seems like hulu may start charging

i've mentioned i don't have a tv set. i do watch at friend's homes or my dad's or elsewhere. i did watch hulu a lot for a while there. sci fi and fantasy shows for the most part (i'm addicted to the genre). it's a shame if they start charging but i guess i understand.

TV websites must begin charging, says Murdoch lieutenant
Bobbie Johnson

American internet TV service Hulu could stage an abrupt turnaround and begin charging viewers for the right to watch programmes online.

The website – which is a joint venture between US television giants NBC, Fox, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, and Disney – is considering bringing in charges for some premium broadcasts.

According to News Corp's deputy chairman, Chase Carey, the advertising-supported free-to-air model that Hulu has used so far is not viable in the long term..............

hey perino S T F U

in no way shape or form is obama like chavez. chavez TAKES OVER AND CLOSES media stations (and newspapers). obama (intelligently i may add. helen thomas disagrees, but i sure as shite wouldn't be dealing with faux 'news' either) just disses them and doesn't really talk to them. they distort (i want to say lie, but i won't). they blur, they give one half of a story. they instigate. they stir up. they have ONE point of view. anyone who cites faux 'news' as an authentic source (for anything other than a simpsons quote) lacks credibility AND a brain

Perino: Obama’s Criticism Of Fox Is Akin To Chavez’s Tactics, Sets A Bad Example For ‘Emerging Democracies’

By Amanda Terkel

Today on Fox News Sunday, host Chris Wallace made sure to devote plenty of time to covering President Obama’s “war on Fox News”; he even played a clip of Sean Connery as Jim Malone “The Untouchables” talking about “the Chicago way” of getting things done. Former Bush press secretary Dana Perino sharply criticized the Obama administration’s tactics and expressed absolute shock at the example the United States was setting for “the free press in emerging democracies,” comparing the criticisms of Fox News to when “Hugo Chavez shuts down television stations”:

PERINO: That was a coordinated, calculated attack. It was unbecoming. And if you look at some of the coverage of what mainstream media covers when, for example, somebody like a Hugo Chavez shuts down television stations, he calls them illegitimate.

Now, I’m not suggesting that this White House believes that they are going to come over here and shut down Fox News. But they are defining a narrative in their first year, and it’s going to be very hard to recover from it. [...].............

hey whoopie and all you other defenders of this rapist

after you read this and claim it wasn't 'rape rape', can you tell me WHAT IT WAS? i want to know please. i want to know what a 43 year old man fucking a 13 year old girl in the ass is called in YOUR world. i want to know what a 43 year old man feeding alcohol and drugs to a 13 year old girl is called in YOUR world. i want to know what it's called when a 43 year old man tells a 13 year old girl NOT to tell anyone what he did to her oh and i also think the (then-a-girl) girl's mother should be held accountable as well

How a girl's stark words got lost in the Polanski spectacle

Samantha Gailey, at 13, was unequivocal in her testimony against Polanski. But her account was turned into something almost benign.

In the flat light of the grand jury room, a nervous, deeply embarrassed 13-year-old girl sat alone -- no attorney, no mother, no friend -- facing three tiers of middle-aged strangers silently studying her from their leather armchairs. The questions that day in March 1977 were clinical in tone. The answers would set off a furor from Hollywood to London and Paris that has yet to subside. Samantha Gailey -- sandy brown hair, dimpled chin, missing class at her junior high in Woodland Hills -- described her alleged rape by director Roman Polanski two weeks before at Jack Nicholson's home above Franklin Canyon. She clutched a small heart charm her friend had given her. "After he kissed you, did he say anything?" asked the prosecutor, Roger Gunson. "No," the girl said. "Did you say anything?" "No, besides I was just going, 'No, come on, let's go home. . . .' He said, 'I'll take you home soon.' " "Then what happened?" "And then he went down and started performing cuddliness." "What does that mean?" "It means he went down on me, or he placed his mouth on my vagina. . . . I was ready to cry. I was kind of -- I was going, 'No. Come on. Stop it.' But I was afraid.".......

Singing flashmob hijacks health insurance conference
By Stephen C. Webster
Theatrical protest group "Billionaires for Wealthcare" has done it again.

During the American Health Insurance Plans' (AHIP) annual State issues conference in Washington, D.C. on Friday, Wealthcare members infiltrated the group and interrupted health industry pollster Bill McInturff's speech with cheers of thanks for his "good work."

However, kind words floating from the back of the room at the Capitol Hilton Hotel quickly turned into a full-blown musical number thanking the insurers for blocking a public health insurance option, set to the tune of "Tomorrow, Tomorrow."

The group called its performance "Public Option Annie," a guerrilla musical..............

The Case of the Inappropriate Alarm Clock (Part 7)

By Errol Morris

(and here is the link to all seven parts)

In 1974, Bill Ganzel, a photographer from Lincoln, Neb., went on the road trip. For seven years, carrying copies of photographs by Arthur Rothstein, Walker Evans and others, Ganzel sought the same people and scenes that the F.S.A. photographers had taken during the 1930s. In 1986, he published “Dust Bowl Descent.”

BILL GANZEL: When I was in college, I saw an exhibit at the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery — which is on the University of Nebraska campus — of FSA photographs, and was just really taken with the way that they brought down to day-to-day living what the big historical event, the Depression, was all about. I was looking at Migrant Mother’s face and saw desperation. I started doing some reading about that. My family was going back to Washington, D.C. We got an aunt who lives there, lives in D.C. And somewhere I came across the information that all these photographs were in the Library of Congress. And I thought, well, rather than doing the tourist stuff that I’d done before, I wonder what it would be like to go to the Library of Congress? I did. A college student coming in and claiming to be a researcher, and they bought it. They said, “O.k., yeah. Come on in. Sign these forms, and you can look at the photographs.” I don’t know whether you’ve ever been to the F.S.A. room. At least what it was like then was that it — just file cabinet after file cabinet. And you can sit there and flip through photographs. There are 80,000 photographs in the collection. Obviously I never got through the entire collection. But I decided to look at a local area, the Great Plains. And then what was I going to do with those photographs when I came back? I had photocopied some of the photographs just to have them. And somehow thought, “Well, o.k., I can go out for a weekend or whatever. And maybe I can find the same place, just to see how it changed.”.........

i was going to make a crack about

this happening in the south (it happened in texas recently too i believe) but i don't think that has ANYTHING to do with it

how does the patriot act (isn't that the ONLY way police or feds can raid without cause and without warrant?) fit into 4 men dancing in their underwear in a bar? are we throwing our constitution, our laws out the window because 4 men were dancing in a bar in their underwear? i wonder how many people are 'illegally' (i'm not sure 4 men in underwear deal is illegal) dancing in STRAIGHT bars (which aren't raided without warrants)?

ok, this is just out and out wrong. aren't there REAL criminals in atlanta? aren't there REAL crimes to be investigated in atlanta?

no drugs at the bar
no nudity at the bar
no lewdness at the bar
4 men in underwear at the bar

that's it

is this america?

and by the way, next time it may be YOU being raided without cause and without a warrant.

Police Raid on the Atlanta Eagle

What Happened at the Atlanta Eagle?

On September 10, 2009, a SWAT-team of Atlanta police officers detained and searched over 60 people without a warrant, probable cause, or even reasonable suspicion of any criminal activity, just because they were patrons at a gay bar called the Atlanta Eagle.

Here’s what happened…

On the evening of on September 10, 2009, Atlanta police officers stormed into the Atlanta Eagle to investigate reports of lewd conduct and to make arrests for unlicensed adult entertainment, because the bar had four dancers in boxer-brief-style costumes.

Fox host appearing at rallies opposing healthcare reform
By Kathleen Miller

A Fox News host is scheduled to make several appearances next week at events and forums where he will "discuss the dangers of government-forced health care," alongside the head of the anti-tax and anti-health care reform group Americans for Prosperity.

John Stossel, a former co-anchor of ABC's 20/20, is hosting a new show on the Fox Business Network called "Stossel," which is described as featuring "in-depth reports on domestic and international libertarian issues" like civil liberties, the business of health care and Social Security.

The network refers to Stossel as a journalist on its website---in fact, "one of the most talented and thought-provoking journalists in the field."......

THE DUST STORM

…the editor, in order to make the point more effective, had changed my words from a conditional subjunctive mood to an indicative past tense…

— Arthur Rothstein

The cow skull photographs and the dust storm photograph are the most famous of Rothstein’s images. Over the years from 1936 to shortly before his death in 1985, he provided many different accounts of how the photographs were taken. They progress from a story of controlled, posed images to a completely uncontrolled, unposed images. Rothstein first wrote about his photograph “Fleeing a Dust Storm” in 1944.[37] In an unusually forthright examination of documentary photography he explains the element of direction in creating an image. In explaining the dust-storm image he says simply, “the little boy was asked to drop back.”.............

Jamie Leigh Jones Takes On Pro-KBR Senators On Rachel Maddow

Last night on the Rachel Maddow Show, Jamie Leigh Jones and her attorney, Todd Kelly, spoke out directly about the Defense Appropriations Bill Amendment, showing their support for the measure and expressing their disappointment with those who voted against it.

Maddow made a point to mention that she reached out to all thirty senators who voted no on the bill amendment for comment - and none of them responded. Maddow also asks Jones and Kelly directly about their thoughts on the senators that voted no, and Session's accusation that this was "a political move."........

Retired General calls Cheney ‘incompetent war fighter’

By Kathleen Miller

A retired General who served more than 30 years in the U.S. Army and helped train Iraq's military between 2003 and 2004 called former Vice President Dick Cheney an "incompetent war fighter."

National Security Network Senior Adviser and Retired General Paul Eaton made the comments after Cheney criticized Obama in a Wednesday night speech for "dithering" about whether to substantially increase the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan.......

........"The record is clear: Dick Cheney and the Bush administration were incompetent war fighters," Eaton said in a statement released Thursday. "They ignored Afghanistan for 7 years with a crude approach to counter-insurgency warfare best illustrated by: 1. Deny it. 2. Ignore it. 3. Bomb it. While our intelligence agencies called the region the greatest threat to America, the Bush White House under-resourced our military efforts, shifted attention to Iraq, and failed to bring to justice the masterminds of September 11."..........

Cheney falsely accuses Obama of ‘libel’ against CIA over torture

By Ron Brynaert

Torture is not torture, according to former Vice President Dick Cheney, and to refer it to as such should be considered libelous. Even if it doesn't actually qualify as libel.

The Washington Times' Amanda Carpenter reports, "Maintaining his stature as one of the most forceful defenders of the Bush Administration's defense policies former Vice President Dick Cheney accused President Obama of committing 'libel' against CIA interrogators on Wednesday" during a speech at the Center for Security Policy.

"In the speech, Mr. Cheney charged that President Obama has 'filled the air with vague and useless platitude' when talking about torture and by calling enhanced interrogation techniques 'torture" he has committed 'libel' against CIA interrogators whom Mr. Cheney described as 'dedicated professionals who acted honorably and well, in our country’s name and in our country’s cause,'" Carpenter adds........
